Saint-John Perse A version by Derek Mahon These are birds, pure and simple, nothing more, their truth the secret of life itself . . . Derek Mahon s previous translation work includes versions of Jaccottet (Words in the Air, 1998) and Valéry (The Seaside Cemetery, 2001). To these he now adds Birds by Saint-John Perse whose long, discursive, musical texts owe something to Rimbaud s Illuminations but are finally unique. Among twentieth-century poets Perse is remarkable for his oceanic qualities, his global reach and philosophical optimism. Birds is about birds, but also about the artistic vocation itself, Yeats s lonely impulse of delight

'For Perse these lines are brief, but they are as fine as anything he has done.' With these words The Times Literary Supplement greeted the publication in France of the last four poems written by the Nobel Prize winner before his death in 1975. The purpose of this book is to elucidate and explain the themes, images and style of the poetry of Saint-John Perse through a critical study of the letters, speeches, testimonials, tributes and articles of the poet-diplomat. The substance of these prose works treats Perse's preoccupation with the creative process in several contexts - individual, social, philosophical, literary, cultural and political. The prose works examined include the «Lettres de Jeunesse», the «Lettres d'Asie», the «Lettres d'Exil», the speeches entitled «Poésie» and «Pour Dante», several of the «Témoignages Littéraires» and «Hommages», as well as some of the poet's critical articles on music.
